Unable to find drivers for anything

I am trying to help a friend set up an older computer which he got from
a friend. The computer is running XP. We were trying to install his
Kodak camera on the computer, but can't get it to work. We installed
all the kodak software first, plugged the camera in, windows recognizes
it as a kodak camera, then looks for drivers, but can't find any. We
tested the camera on my computer and it works fine. We then tried
installing an iPod shuffle, and got to the exact same place (XP
recognizes the iPod, looks for drivers but can't find any). I also
tried plugging in my USB flash drive, and again recognizes it as a USB
instant drive, but looks for drivers (both on HD and internet) but
can't find them. We also tried to install a new 4 port USB2 card, and
surprise, windows can't seem to find/install drivers for it. I have
never seen this happen, anyone have any clues as to what may be causing
it? One odd thing about this HP Pavilion computer is that when it is
booting up, it goes to a screen asking which ask which operating system
to load
1) Windows XP Pro
2) Windows
3) Windows XP Pro

The windows option doesn't boot up, but the pro ones boot up fine. So
it seems that maybe the friend that originally had this computer may
have installed windows twice. Think this is related?

Looks like your friend's Windows installation is all messed up. If it was
me, I would do a clean install of the OS, after first reformatting the HD
(save any important files to another storage medium first). Hope he/she has
a legitimate copy of Windows so that activation is possible.

The installation needs to be started over, and all updates installed too..
that includes SP2.. make sure that the drive is formatted first to get shot
of all old installations..

Kodak cameras should just connect without having to load Kodak software,
which I don't believe is compatible with XP anyway..

The Kodak easyshare software is compatible with XP, I have never had
any issues with it. Is it possible that installing a DVD-Rom drive may
be causing these issues? Something like all the IRQs are being used
now or something like that? We were thinking that a few months ago,
someone else used a USB flash drive on the computer and it worked fine,
and I think the DVD-rom drive is the only thing that has changed since
then. I couldn't think of any reasons why a DVD drive would be
affecting the installation of USB drivers, but I should go ahead and
try disconnecting the new drive.

Thanks,

Kodak software didn't used to be compatible with XP, but that was some while
ago..

Re. the DVD drive, disconnect it and see if the problems persist..

Be sure the Kodak Camera Service is 'started' in your services listing (via
Administrator Tools) as well as the 'UPnP' related services. Once correctly
connected to your computer you will see the camera listed as 'drive x:' (x
being whatever drive letter Windows gives your camera) in My Computer.
