File encryption is not available in XP Home Edition. For that you would need XP
Professional installed on your machine. However, there are third party programs
available that may work for you. Here's one such program.

TrueCrypt

As for password protecting files, no version of XP has that capability other
than for a compressed folder. Instead, XP uses permissions for folders stored on
drives formatted NTFS to allow or deny access to their contents. It's a simple
process to configure if you have XP Professional. With XP Home Edition, you can
only make changes to permissions in Safe mode.

Here's an article that covers some of the basics. You might want to do a Google
search on NTFS permissions for more info.

Set permissions for folders and files

Good luck
