Unable to enable sound device driver

There is no sound issuing forth from my laptop speaker. I
have tried reinstalling the drivers and totally
reinstalling Windows XP but still my sound does not work.

I think this has to do with the sound devices not being
enabled when I checked them in the device manager.
However, the area that lets you enable/disable a device
within a device's properties tab is shadowed and I cannot
select it. Any help woulod be appreciated, thank you.

I had a similar problem with Win2000 on my laptop. No matter what I did, I
couldn't get the sound even though the speaker icon was present etc.

Then...I pressed the Volume Up key on the keyboard and the sound was there!
If you have similar keys on your laptop, try those.
