Unable to download pictures from camera

I have a Canon S40 camera. When I connect the camera, Word opens. I am
unable to download the pictures. Does anyone know of a solution?
 
same thing with my computer. I plug in my canon camera and word stars no
pictures!!!!!!! Misery loves company I guess any fixes???
