I have a new Lenovo Laptop with Vista Premium and cannot download any e-mail
that has an attachment withit. All plain e-mail come right in but Windows
Mail hangs up if there is any type of attachment.

This not a case of not being able to open an attachment. Windows Mail
willnot complete any download of e-mails that includes an e-mail with an
attachemnt.

I have tried to turn off any anti virus sprograms that I can find but still
suspect there is one I have oerlooked. I have spent far to much time looking,
iIt should be obvious but no luck so far. The IBM help uses Google searches!

Thank you for your reply.

I removed the Norton trial software that came with the computer by using the
uninstall option. I hope this has completely removed Norton.

Norton was the main problem that caused me to upgrade from the old computer
with Windows 98. The renewal this year killed the computer and even after
trying to completely remove Norton the old computer still does some trips to
nevernever land. At least it will accept e-mails that have attachments!

I removed the E-mail internet account, closed and reopened Windows Mail and
re-entered the account. (I tried to re boot but have not found a way to do
this?)

Any e-mail with an attachment still starts downloading (with a green line
going from left to right, but stopping part way) and then a message window
comes up with "POP3 has not responded after 60 seconds" with "wait" or "stop"
options. I have to download this e-mail to another computer to avoid a
second hang up.

Does Windows Defender have any blockers that need to be dissabled?

Try rebooting. Shutdown the computer and restart it. If you still have the
problem go to Start | Search and type msconfig and then disable the startup
items and all non-MS services and then restart and see if it works then.

If it still doesn't work with attachments, see if this helps:

1. Go to the Vista start menu and type cmd
2. The search results will display a program titled cmd
3. Right-click on the link and select "Run as administrator"
4. type "netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=disabled" without
the quotatioin marks
5. Test your POP account and see if you can now download your mail.
6. If nothing changes, reenable the autotuning feature by typing
"netsh interface tcp set global autotuning=normal"

Steve,

Disabling the Autotune has done the trick and now attachments come straight
through.

What has this done to the operation of the software? What things may I need
to lookout for because the Autotuning is disabled?

Looking through the messages it apppers that several other Windows Mail
users are having the same problem. They say they cannot open attachments when
from the description it could well be that they have not been able to
downloaded them.

I find it hard to believe that Microsoft has not addressed this problem.

Thanks again,

Thanks for the feedback. Don't worry about the autotune issue if its
working now. <G>
