I friend of mine(MR. IT) deleted some much needed files for my business by
mistake and we cleaned out the recycle bin also. I need to get these files
back. Tried to do a system restore but i was not able to do and got the
following message.
"SYSTEM RESTORE IS NOT ABLE TO PROTECT YOUR COMPUTER, PLEASE RESTART YOUR
COMPUTER, AND THEN RUN SYSTEM RESTORE AGAIN."
i HAVE BEEN ALL OVER THE MS site and didnt find a thing to help me.
I tried doing a start up in safe mode to see if that would work and got a
blue stop screen message.
THERE HAS TO BE SOMEONE WHO CAN HELP ME FIX THIS???

System Restore repairs system files and the registry. It doesn't handle
business files.

Download and run Restoration or another Undelete program. The more you
use the hd with the deleted files, the more data you overwrite, so you
should download the program to a flash drive, or floppy.

Yep - and that is you.
Do you have backups of your business files? If not, they weren't very
important to you were they?
I bet you are also running Norton AV or Internet Security, hence the system
restore message.
Why don't you ask your Mr IT where the backups are?

You're looking in the wrong place, look in your backups or use data recovery
software. System Restore doesn't do anything with *your* data.

If the files were deleted and the recycle bin emptied, and there are no
backups, you need to quickly find data recovery or undelete software, and
you need to use your drive as little as possible. Using the drive will
lead to overwriting the deleted files, reducing the chances of recovering
them. Best is to physically remove the drive from your system, attach it
to another system with the recovery software loaded. This prevents further
overwriting.

To recover your those undeleted files from your hard drive you can try
Stellar Phoenix Deleted File Recovery Software. This deleted file
recovery tool is designed to undelete files from hard drives formatted
on FAT 16, FAT 32, and NTFS & NTFS 5 file systems.
Download the demo from: http://www.stellarinfo.com/deleted-file-recovery.htm
Demo will show you the preview of the recovered data.

so when i download this to a floppy, im presuming then to load it onto the
desktop im going to restore? how am i going to know what files i lost were?

instead of replying and sounding like a wiseguy, you could offer up some
advice, i didnt have a backup because i didnt suspect he would do something
by mistake. now i have one though. My goal is to figure out who to get the
system to restore so i can see if that works.

wow, there is ten thousand files to look through with the recuva software.
I am looking for files that say the date he did this right?
Can i do a request for the date he did this work or do i have to figure out
which files i lost one at a time?
How do i recognize the files i lost that were in WORD program and my
documents?

but wont a system restore put back the hard drives the way they were before
he messed them up?

If you have a floppy drive, run it from there. The Undelete utilities I
used years ago showed a list of deleted files. You had to decide on the
first letter of each file. I don't believe that's necessary any more
though. Just repair all in the list, or look at their folder locations
to see if available.

Maybe if they can be listed by containing folder, or maybe there's a
Details view that would help.. I haven't seen the program run myself.

Recover them all and work it out from there. Do one or two first and
see where they're stored.. Maybe dedicate a folder for this action.
Does the program's Help section offer any practical ideas?

You're the one with the problem, not me.
Perhaps if you had a backup in the first place, a basic, and I mean basic,
IT requirement for a business, your issue would not have arisen. Still, why
should I worry? As it happens, I do have a certain wisdom, bourne from
experience.
As to your system restore, do you have Norton SW? You haven't answered
that.
