Unable to display the folder

I have searched the knowledge bases and nothing from
there works. I am using Outlook 2003. I have two
problems.

1. The folder for the outbox doesn't show up.

2. i tried sending a very large file > 20Mb and it has
gotten stuck in the outbox.

I can't get into the outbox to delete it because the
outbox won't display. I have tried going offline,
waiting for the failure to occur, and turning off the
automatic send to allow time to get through the upload
but nothing is working. I tried to delete the
outlook.dbx file as described in one of the microsoft
knowledge base articles, but I can't find it anywhere.

Short of deleting the account and starting over I don't
know what to do. Help!

Place Outlook in Off-line mode (File-> Work Off line) and restart
it. Now you should be able to delete the message. If not use SHIFT+DELETE or
move it to another folder and delete it from there.

If you still can't view the folder see if you can view it in safe mode.
Start-> Run; "path to outlook.exe" /safe

If this fails as well try starting it with the /resetfolders switch.

Didn't work starting it in safe mode or the offline and
restart. I am unfamiliar with the reset folders option.

Anything you can do to help would be great.

Thanks Roady for the reply.

Chuck

Another way to go would be to add another pst-file;
File-> New-> Outlook Data File...

Set it as the default delivery location;
Tools-> E-mail Accounts-> Next...

Restart Outlook

See if you can delete it now.

To change back setting go back to Tools-> E-mail Accounts and set the
original pst-file as the default and restart Outlook.

Thanks agaon Roady but I still can't display the folder.
I think if I could dispaly the folder I might be able to
move on with the problem of deleting the large file.

When you have Outlook configured with the second pst-file you can delete the
Outbox folder completely from the original pst-file. When you then set the
original file again as the default delivery folder the Outbox folder will be
recreated.

Sorry Roady

I tried that and even closed & opened outlook a couple of
time with the new pst as the default e-mail recipient. I
isolated the old pst file as much as possible and still
won't let me delete the outbox. Also, still have the
folder unable to display. The unable to display has been
a problem for a while. The new problem - outbox file - is
the new one.

I do appreciate your help. Maybe in the morning it will
be gone - maybe. :) I'll let you know. If yo have any
other ideas I'm listening.

Arg, I forgot the obvious;
run scanpst.exe against the original pst-file when Outlook is closed and see
if it comes up with anything.

.

By default you can find scanpst.exe (or Inbox Repair Tool) in C:\Program
Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\<locale ID>

Start it and follow on-screen instructions.

To locate your pst-file;
Make sure you include hidden and system files and folders when searching for
pst-file.

By default it is located in
C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Outlook\

You can also locate the file by using
Rightclick the root folder (probably Outlook Today)-> Properties-> button
Advanced-> field Filename

Well Roady I ran the scanpst.exe and it found and
repaired 9 errors but none of them were my problem. I
then went in and created a new file so I could delete the
old outbox and it still won't let me do it. I am at a
loss here.

So you have a new pst-file configured as your default delivery location now?
To get rid of your problem I suggest your transfer all your "old" e-mail to
the new pst-file and then delete the pst-file giving you the errors. Not a
nice way of getting rid of it but at least you will be rid of it ;-)
