Worksheets open with over 60,000 rows and many columns. Selecting cells and
using the delete command does not work. Assume there is there is no links
from worksheets to any other document because "Links" command is not
highlighted.

There are 256 columns and 65536 rows in an Excel worksheet.

You cannot delete these. You may hide unused rows and columns but you cannot
delete them.

If your apparent "used range" is larger than what you believe it to be, see
Debra Dalgleish's site for info and fixes.

Is the worksheet protected ? If so try turning it off
Tools, Protection, unprotect sheet

Do you have merged cells ? If so unmerge them
then remerge them. Watch what you are doing, that
you don't wipe out cells that are the address location
(upper left corner) of a group of merged cells.
Format, Cells, Alignment to unmerge a selection
There are also toolbar buttons.
