Unable to delete or create folders

At present, I am completely unable to create or delete any folders on any
drive. Applications can create and delete files as necessary, but if I try to
do it myself, I always get the following error message:

-------------------------------------------------------------

explorer.exe - Application Error

The instruction at "0X03as415b" referenced memory at "0x00000000". The
memory could not be "written".

Click on OK to terminate the program
Click on Cancel to debug the program

---------------------------------------------------

If I click OK my screen just displays the desktop background for a while and
slowly everything else appears. If I click Cancel, everything just hangs and
then eventually I get a message saying that Dr.Watson has crashed.

I can delete or create any file without a problem - I just can't delete
folders.

I've run scandisk and Disk Defragmenter with no change. I've also removed
all the programmes I've installed recently, but again, no joy.

I'm running Windows XP SP2.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like one of two things. Either you have corrupt files on the
system, or you have a dodgy slug of ram in the PC.

Try clicking Start - Run - Scannow /scannow (enter)

This should run through and try locate damaged files in the windows system,
it may (probably) ask you for the windows CD so have that handy. If you
cannot do that then try re-applying SP2 again.

If neither of those work try downloading
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp (second link) and make the bootable
CD. This will test the RAM in your system and let you know the good/bad news
about the physical RAM

Hope that helps
