unable to delete in 'file' menu

i can delete the contents of a no longer needed file, but name of file remains on the 'file' menu list. how do i get rid of it please?
 
CTRL+ALT+hyhen activates the terminator

your cursor converts to a thick black hyphen. Click FIle and then the
filename you want to kill.

ESC to terminate the terminator
 
Follow Greg's advice -- but be _very_ careful when you do so. That thick
black hyphen you get for a cursor can delete anything off _any_ of your
menus, not just old files.
