Unable to delete an email account

I have two AOL email accounts. I want to delete one which has nothing but
spam coming to it but I am having alot of trouble in trying to get rid of it.

Tools>accounts>select the account>remove, is that what you tried?

Please elaborate on "but I am having alot of trouble in trying to get rid of
it" really means?
