I Suddenly started having a problem with my attglobal.net dialup
connection. This is not the first time this happened. The last
time (early Jan 04)I had to reinstall win2000 to clear the problem
because I thought that the installation of a print server caused the
problem.
This time I did not install of change anything. I just tried to
reconnect to the ISP and then got the same error as before.
"can't create socket" message that was logged to the startup log and
then the connection disconnects. A connection is made but then
during the login process I get this error message.
I finally wised up (a little) that the problem was not just
related to my dialup when I tried to use WinProxy on my laptop to
as my connection proxy to the Internet and I could not
connect to the laptop from the desktop.
The Ping utility does function between the desktop and the laptop.
So then I tried using TTCP to test the connection between the laptop
and the desktop and the send (on the desktop) could not open a connection.
BTW I installed a new modem (external) between these occurances not that
I think the problem is with the hardware but just to complete the picture.
Any help would be appreciated, I don't want to reinstall Windows again.
The machine in question is running win2000 sp4 on a P4 1.5 Ghz with 1 GB
RAM.
The laptop is using a wireless connection to my internal (home) network.
Couple of questions:
Does win2000 still use the old winsock libaries?
Is it possible the winsock lib got corrupted? If so, how can I replace it?
Or is there some registry entry that was changed/deleted/mangeled?
Thanks
