I can no longer copy anything to my DVD and CDRW burners using windows. They
have always worked fine. I can copy things using nero. When I try to use
windows I get a message saying decive "D" or "E" is inaccessible. I right
clicked each drive to enable the recording feature but the tab that says
recording is no longer there for my D drive. When I put a blank cd in and
right click the drive and choose properties it is showing the disk as being
full or all blue but with 0 bytes. I tried unistalling both devices through
device manager and restarting windows but this didn't work. I also
reinstalled the driver for my DVD burner but still nothing.
The only thing I can figure is that I ran a program called ccleaner some
time ago and some how deleted some necessary files or registry enteries but
I'm not sure this is the problem.
My question is: can I fix this without having to reinstall windows xp?

If Nero is working try installing Nero's Incd app so you can use CD/DVD-RW
media like a floppy.. You should disable the inbuilt XP CD Wiz when using
Nero or third party burning apps.. There is no problem with your system..
If you must use the CD Wiz remove Nero, but you won't be able to burn DVD's,
your call..

Why would I have to remove Nero inorder to use the CD wizard. My system
worked fine for the last two years with Nero installed and the CD wizard
worked fine. This problem just started?

Well, now your system has evidently become unstable with both installed, it
was always recommended that when using third party burning app's to disable
the XP inbuilt burning app to avoid conflicts.. The inbuilt app to my
knowledge has never really been updated through Windows Update since it's
inception early on, so go figure.. See the links and investigate.

I just use Nero & InCd, have had the inbuilt turned off for years now..
So, It is dated and unsupported as far as updates, has no ability to burn to
DVD's..

If you must have the CD Wiz, you might try this to see if it will work for
you...
Try reinstalling the MS generic cdrom drivers..
In my computer, tools, folder options, view tab, in advanced settings,
you'll need to first mark "show hidden files and folders", then uncheck the
box for "Hide extensions of known file types".. Now you can go to the
windows\INF folder and find "cdrom.inf" and right click it, select install
from the menu..
Remember to change back to your original settings in folder options..
Hope this can help..

I really appreciate your help. I reinstalled the generic drivers like you
said but all blank disc are still showing as full with 0 bytes and I have no
recordings tab in properties to enable that function?

I changed the value in the registry from 3 to 2 and I now have the recordings
tab back. However my blank cd's are still showing as full and when I try to
copy anything it ask me to insert a blank cd even though one is already in
the drive?

Ok, you know their blank, right..? That is what will show until you install
InCd 4 and format the CD/DVD-RW media, if you want drag and drop capabilities
for that media..
CD/DVD -/+ R media will require you to use the Nero Burning ROM or Nero
Express etc, and should be seen and usable from within the Nero app or
possibly another app, but XP will not be able to show you the contents of a
blank disk, why, because their blank.. Are you saying the disks have data on
them..?

What version of Nero are you using, InCd should be included on the
installation CD..?

Ok, you used the above to restore the recording tab, great..
Have you disabled the inbuilt XP burner..?

What ver of Nero are you using..?

Is Nero not seeing the CD-R or is it a Windows XP pop-up message window, if
the latter just disregard and use Nero to burn the data to CD-R..?
You will need to choose CD mode in Nero to use it, also check the recorder
tab in Nero burning rom, choose recorder, to make sure your optical drive is
indeed selected, not the image recorder..

CD-R media will not let you copy files on the fly, that was a feature the XP
CD Wiz offered, it is not supported in Nero.. You can only write once and
then the disk will be finalized even if the disk is not completely full or if
you copy just one file, it will be closed, and you will never be able to
write files again to that CD-R.. That is why you need to use the
CD/DVD/-/+/RW media & InCD for this purpose instead..

Yes they're blank. One is brand new. I realize I can use Nero but this
problem just recently started. I've had Nero Express installed for a couple
of years and had no problem using the windows copy wizard until now.

Okay. To simplyfy things I uninstalled alcohol 120% as well as Nero Express.
However, I still cannot copy anything with drive D or E. Also blank media
is showing full on both drives.

Things are going from bad to worse. After uninstalling the previously
mentioned programs I went into device manager and uninstalled both drives. I
then restarted my computer but neither drive is showing up when I go to my
computer. I restarted again to make sure but nothing. I checked in device
manager but the two drives are showing with a yellow! bside them. When I
click on them it says the following; "Windows cannot load the device driver
for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)" I've
had enough for one day. I'll try again tomorrow.

Well, I'm sorry it just happened, ok, I've had the same experience myself
with other software that needed to be upgraded to work properly with XP, so I
either updated, or upgraded or uninstalled it.. The trouble with the inbuilt
CS Wiz is it has not to my knowledge been updated, the upgrade for it is
Nero, in your case.. Remember, you can always re-enable the inbuilt XP burner
if MS does decide to update it in the future..

Let's say, perhaps it was a windows update that caused the problem.. Perhaps
uninstalling your most recent updates would solve the problem, then what..?
Your not up to date and vulnerable, there's no guarantee that reinstalling
the removed updates won't result in the same scenario.. I just don't know,
can't see your computer from here and you don't seem to be able or willing to
answer my questions, so anything I can offer is just a blind guess at this
point..

The above fix has been known to help in certain cases, in your case it's a
guess, may need to reinstall Nero after it's use.. Before you use it, you may
want to check device manager, properties, driver tab, click the details
button for your optical drive and see if there are any unsigned drivers mixed
in with the four I had you reinstall..
The fact that you had a problem reinstalling the MS generic drivers
indicates a problem somewhere..

What have you done recently that you can remember that may have caused the
problem, did you update your Nero Express, other DVD backup software updated,
added, etc, that you can think of..?
Or, repost your problem and see if others have any solutions, I would love
to know of a quick and painless solution myself, I'm always up for learning
something new..

I apologize if I upset you. I was able to get control of my drives by
deleting the upper and lower filter values as suggestted in the link you
provided. I then ran the windows xp installation disk and chose upgrade.
This has fixed both of my drives and now when I put in a blank disk and right
click the drive and chose properties the Cd is showing pink or empty. I also
have the recordings tab showing under properties in both drives.
Thanks again for your help.

I really appreciate your concern, my typos do seem to increase when I get a
bit frazzled but not really upset.. Just wish I could see what you're seeing
so I can try and be on the same page, without causing more harm than good..

I am really glad you were able to solve your dilemma, hope it stays fixed
for another two years at least.. Sometimes it's just easier, maybe even
quicker to do a repair install than trying to dismantle things piece by piece
in the hopes of avoiding one..

I guess, I'm just use to my blank media showing up in Windows as being full
with zero free space.. I choose to except it, I know why it's happening, the
apps I use compensate as well as aggravate this situation.. I guess all in
all, I am able to get done what I need to get done, overlooking the minor
aggravations involved in doing so..

Best wishes..
