Unable to copy and paste files

I have a laptop that is unable to copy and paste files.
It was running low on disk space (650 MB) when this
started but now has over 1.5 GB available and still will
not copy and paste a file. When I try to paste the file
I don't get any error, the computer just beeps like an
error message should be coming up but none does. I've
checked the event logs an find nothing out of the norm.
Has anyone heard of this problem before? Oh yah, the
files I was trying to copy were small (< 100KB).

What happens when you copy a file from a Command Prompt?
