Unable to Connect to Web

While camping last week I was able to connect my WinXP(SP3) laptop to two
different wi-fi networks but neither Firefox 3 or IE 7 was able to connect to
the web.

Using ipconfig I was able to ping the IP address and the default gateway but
I was not able to ping google.com or yahoo.com.

The WinXP Home Web Diagnostic Tool stated that I was connected to the
networks but that entries were missing in my winsock catalog. The suggested
fix, enter netsh winsock reset, reported a successful reset of the catalog
but the initial problem repeated itself when trying to connect either browser
to the Web and running the Web Diagnostic again reported the same winsock
error.

Any thoughts or solutions are gratefully appreciated.

Have you since used the same computer successfully to connect to the
Internet? If not, does that computer have Zone Alarm installed? If yes
(that is, the "problem" laptop still can't access the Internet and does
have ZA installed), see:
http://download.zonealarm.com/bin/free/pressReleases/2008/LossOfInternetAccessIssue.html

Do not choose "option 2" on that page.

If the above isn't your issue, are you certain that these were intended
to be publicly-accessible wifi hotspots (e.g., provided by the operator
of an RV campground) or were they just unsecured wireless networks that
happened to be in range?

Did you reboot the computer after resetting winsock? That's necessary
to make the reset take effect.

Lem,

When I returned home I enabled my Comcast network connection and disabled my
wireless connection. I am able to connect to the Web normally using my cable
modem, I do not use a router at home. I use only the WinXp firewall.

The campground wireless is fee-based and intended to be used by campers. The
other is for public use at a Maine state visitor center.

Steve,

I did reboot the computer after each attempt to reset the catalog to no avail.
