Hello,

My name is Jim, and I am trying to setup a two machine home network to get
both machines on the internet. For reasons which I don't understand the only
configuration which seems to work is to route the second computer through my
computer, and then have my computer plugged directly into the cable modem.
This worked in the past, but after recently doing a system restore on the
other computer it cannot now connect to the internet. File and printer
sharing between the two computers works just fine, and I can ping back and
forth between them, but I cannot make that other computer talk to the rest of
the world. Both computers are operating on windowsXPpro service pack 2 fully
installed and activated.

Any help would be appreciated, and if I haven't provided critical or
necessary information please feel free to ask any questions which might be
relevant.

Thank you.

Unless your cable modem connects to your computer using a USB
connection, you would be much better off purchasing an inexpensive home
router. If you want the option of connecting one or both computers
wirelessly, get a wireless router; if you don't care about that, you can
possibly save a little money by getting a wired router.

A router permits you to use either computer to access the Internet
without requiring that the other is powered up. It also provides a
measure of protection by using Network Address Translation (NAT) and
many routers also provide some type of firewall.

If you want to continue as you have been, however, you probably need to
re-configure Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) on the computer to which
the cable modem is connected. For confirmation, on the *second*
computer, open a command prompt window and type
"ipconfig /all" (without quotes) and press enter

If ICS is working, the IP address of the second computer should be of
the form 192.168.0.x where x is 2 through 254. I suspect that it will
turn out to be of the form 169.254.x.y which is the automatic IP address
Windows assigns when it can't connect to a DHCP server.

To set up ICS, see

If none of the above helps, provide results of ipconfig /all from *both*
computers.

Jim,

Please provide us the logs from "ipconfig /all" for both computers.
