Unable to close IE window

Steph

Clicking on "X" button does not close window - including
pop-ups. Using "File - Close" does not work either. I can
only use Windows Task Manager to close, which results in
IE shutting down as well. Using Windows XP Professional.
Have downloaded/installed all pertinant patches and
updates.

I have the same problem and I have tried this:
Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

and found that disabling 3rd party browser extensions does solve the
problem. I then scanned my system with Ad-Aware and found no spyware,
only a few cookies.

Does anyone know what I should try next ?

Thanks

Stephane

Hi Steph :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, but, be aware, your
Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware, worms, etc.,
and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such as AdAware and
SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must also be run in
Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan all files. Even
if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does not mean your
system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean your machine.
Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can replicate
themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly. Follow the steps
here:

Download and install HiJackThis. This is one of the most important steps.
Follow all instructions carefully. This program should be run in Normal
mode.

Thanks a lot Jan for all your help.

I use Windows XP professional

I have ran HiJackThis and just looking at the log the word "myway"
grabbed my attention. I just got my dell machine and it came with this
annoying "Myway" plugin installed. I did a search on Dell's support
forum on Myway and found this:

I followed the instructions and removed myway, restarted my computer,
and now, I seem to be able to close my IE windows with 3rd party
browser extensions enabled.

Thanks again for you help.
