Running XP Pro on a workgroup but have deselected 'simple file sharing' so
I can see the security tab.

I have full control of the folder and its sub-folders but cannot remove the
'read only' attribute from the folders but all the files in the folder and
sub-folders are not set to 'read only'.

I can delete the files and folders despite the folders being set as 'read
only'.
Normally this wouldn't be a problem but some of these folders are uploaded
to my web site and when I try to delete them from the web site I cannot and
get 'invalid argument'. I suspect that the 'read only' attribute is being
transferred to the web site.

I should add that I have taken ownership of the folders and sub-folders.

Any help appreciated.

For some strange reason, lately, lot's of people have been asking the same
question about this read only flag in the folders. It just seems to me that
all of you that ask this question must have seen some article someplace
because I just can not see a situation that all you people would have the
need to actually check this read only flag.
This question has been answered over and over, but I do understand that not
everyone knows that. So just to say it again; this read-only flag is not
actually making the folder read only. It's by design. You can still rename
or delete it with out creating read-only error. The Read-only and System
attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the folder
is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view customized by
Windows

This is normal in Windows. I really don't think it is related to your
problem. Look here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q326549

It looks more like the configuration of your FTP program or the
permissions that are set on the files that reside on the server.

Thanks for the reply Colin and sorry if my question 'broke the camel's
back' Pavel <g> but I assure you no article was involved in my question,
just that I had got fed up with not being able to delete directories off my
web space.

I thought I had covered all the MSKB articles but that one eluded me,
thanks for the link.

Colin, don't know if you can help further.
I assume my web site is hosted on a Unix box as the directory attributes
look like Unix code to my untrained eye.

The directories have the following attributes drwxr-xr-x, I assume the 'd'
means 'delete'.
If I try to delete it I get 'Error 550: invalid argument'

For the time being I am creating directories on the web host and just
uploading files rather than uploading files and directories but have not
yet doen a test upload to see if I can delete the directories created on
the host.

Many thanks for your help.

Dave
