When I try to change the homepage (it was changed to ntlworld.com after I
was force to download their software and set up a new account or loose the
account) I get the egg timer and the PC locks up. Rebooting is the only way
out.

Are the two connected and is there a solution>?

Sometimes ISP's "brand" your Browser when you install their software upon
sign-up for their service however, it is unlikely that the two are connected.

Have a look here for possible solutions, your best bet would be install
"Ad-aware"
and run a full Spyware scan - http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm

Please post here with your finding.

The problem went away subsequently and I was 'allowed' to change the
homepage. I ran ad-aware (which I already had). Thanks for reminding me,
I've not run it for at least 6 months.

You need to update AdAware before using it every time.

Lavasoft, (generally) release *new* Reference Files weekly -
http://www.lavasoftsupport.com/ {Look for Reference File updates}.

Run Ad-aware weekly or more often, just like you would your pre-installed
A-V scanner. Norton, Grisoft, Trend, etc.

Glad all is well!
