Can't capture digital movies from my JVC GR DX camera with a firewire.
Windows "pings" when I turn on the camera, sees it as a camera but I am not getting any images. Capturing fails and I am geting a message I have to configure the deveise/and/or camera. I can control the camera but that's it.!
Other program failing also. USB works ok.

How can help me?

The dv-avi files that MM makes arequite large, do you have plenty of hard
drive space. Is it defragged, have you turned off all other apps, inc
internet connection/screensaver etc.
Try running the tape forward a little (10 seconds), as some are configured
to run back before starting and it may be this.

I would try a new cable and another cam in your pc, one that you know works,
it could just be a fault with one of them.

Codec stands for COmpression DECompression, so it's a piece of software that
compresses a file and then decompresses it to be able to use it, and you
have to use the same one to do both jobs.
The same as Winzip, which nearly everyone is familiar with. I'm not at all
sure it will be a codec problem.
What do you do when you open up moviemaker? can you list the steps you take
and settings you choose. I'm not sure this will help if you have managed to
capture to another pc, as you should be doing it right, but I'm running out
of ideas?
Did the other pc have any other software on it for capturing? Did it have
all the same windows updates etc? Do you have sp1a installed?

Hej,

I just checked my camera and cable with another computer with MM and it
juist worked find. I reinstalled WINDOWS XP and tried again. The same
failure.
Firewire card is ok with internal checks by DELL.
They state it has to be a "codec" (software) problem. Who can help me with
this problem. Who can I find the rigth codes (what ever this may be!)

Hej Graham,

Thnks voor the advise. The other PC was in a Dixon's shop.I don't know what specific software the had. I am not sure what u mean by SP1 ??
I'm going to format my disks, install everything once again. If that fails I am going to buy another card with a written garentee (in blood) it will work with JVC
