unable to burn cds

I have a sata cd burner running under Windows XP. I am able to burn cds
through Windows Media player but whenever I try burning using either the
built in windows software or magic ISO, I am unable to do so. Windows
supplies an error message and the burn button is 'greyed out' in magic ISO.

Any thoughts?

Because WMP is the default burner ?
 
I don't think so. They used to co-exist without a problem. Also noticed that
I can erase cd-rw without any problem?
