I am having problems similar to those described by many on
the site. In the desparate hope that some MS engineer
will help us out, I am posting details of my situation.

In the process of trying to install a router, I seemed to
have screwed up my DSL connection. I have abandoned the
router, but now after I connect through my ADSL modem, I
cannot browse to any site by IP adress or name. Details:

- I can ping internet sites using an IP address, including
the DNS servers.

- I cannot ping or nslookup any site by name.

- Netscape navigator gives the following error when it
starts: "Netscape wa unable to create a network socket
connection."

-- ipconfig /registerdns does not seem to give me an erorr.

-- reinstalling TCP/IP using netsh does not seem to have
helped. Attached below is a the log of from my last
reinstall efforts.

-- I noticed in the event viewer, the following error
messages appearing since my problems started:

"Your computer was not able to renew its address from the
network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with
network address B2AA142B4C0B. The following error
occurred: The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your
computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its
own from the network address (DHCP) server."

"Your computer was not able to renew its address from the
network (from the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with
network address 00047650268C. The following error
occurred: An operation was attempted on something that is
not a socket. . Your computer will continue to try and
obtain an address on its own from the network address
(DHCP) server."

"Your computer was unable to automatically configure the
IP parameters for the Network Card with the network
address 00047650268C. The following error occurred during
configuration: The requested service provider could not be
loaded or initialized."

-- Here is what I get from ipconfig /all

I had a very similar problem that can be found under the
post "XP DNS resolution, Anyone have an answer yet?" Post.

In short, I followed the instructions given by Ken Wickes
and it worked for me. Here is a snippet from the Ken
Wickes post...

"I have traced several of these problems to improperly
configured winsock
LSPs. Run "winmsd" and go to
Components/Network/Protocol. Look at the
names in the list, anything with "MSAFD" in it or
the "RSVP xxx Service
Provider" should be fine. Anything else is suspect, and
uninstalling the
owning program might help.

If that fails or your provider list is empty, you may need
to rebuild the
catalog from scratch. The following instructions will
rebuild your catalog
for TCP/IP. If you are using any other transports (If you
don't know, then
you probably aren't) then you will have to reinstall them
as well.

1. Backup and delete the following registry keys

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsoc
k
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsoc
k2

2. Reboot

3. Go to the network connections folder, right click the
icon for your
network connection, and select properties.

4. Click install, choose "protocol", and click "add..."

5. Click "Have Disk...", enter "\windows\inf", click OK

6. Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click OK

7. When the process in complete, reboot

This seems to be the answer. Of course, this solution is
provided "AS IS."

Now this is super crazy cause i just had the same thing
last night and i can't seem to fix this. i used the article
on Microsofts site in regards to deleting the winsock1 and
winsock2 from the registry and then the commandnetsh int ip
reset resetlog.txt and it still won't work. i know what did
this too.

dang spyware remover. i installed it and found 79
instances of spyware and when i told it to delete em and
rebooted, but i get the "An operation was attempted on
something that is not a socket" WTF?
I am really getting pissed here workin on this thing. Did a
reload of xp pro, no fix. Removed the network card, no fix.
removed the application, no fix. what else can it be?

This is on XP pro.

Someone please respond.

I got my system working again. In case it helps anyone,
here is what happened.

I installed McAfee virusscan and firewall long before i
had any problems. When I started having problems, I
uninstalled the firewall just in case that was causing
problems. After that I checked the winmsd protocol list
and noticed many entries for "McAfee" which
included "MSAFD" or "RSVP xxx Service" in the titles.
Since I had unsintalled the firewall and since I had the
McAfee virus scan software running long before I had
problems, I thought these were not a big deal. Last night
I uninstalled every McAfee component I could find.
Instantly, without even rebooting, everything started
working again.
