Unable to bring up .htm files on my hard drive with Explorer

While in Explorer and when I click on a file that is a .htm file in a
directory on my C: hard drive I get an error message that says:
"There was a problem sending the command to the program" and it
doesn't bring up the .htm file. I think this is a recent problem and
it is possible I did something to cause this to happen but don't know
what it is. Can anyone clue me in on what may be causing this
problem.

I don't know if the help that I got recently from HP Customer help may
have had anything to do with the problem but I mention it in case it
may have. I was having problems with my computer not restarting but
instead would shut down when doing a "START/TURN OFF
COMPUTER/RESTART." While using the "RUN/MSCONFIG" they had me stop a
few programs from starting at boot up.

Thanks a lot to anybody who can help me solve this problem.

Re-establish the web settings for IE:

Close all IE windows.
Control Panel> Internet Options> Programs. Click the button to "Reset Web
Settings." Click Apply.

Place a check in the box "Internet Explorer should check to see whether it
is the default browser." (If a check is already there, uncheck it and click
Apply. Then check the box.) Click OK. Take IE for a spin online. When it
asks if it should be the default browser, say yes.

Try going into control panel \ internet options \ programs. Put a
checkmark in the box that says IE should check that it's the default
browser. Apply and okay your way out. When you next restart IE, it
should ask if you want it to be the default. (The usual reason is that
another browser was tried out, it snagged the default position and
then was uninstalled.)

Hard to say. If you still have this problem, you might want to check
out Kelly's a-z section and her tweaks area.

Thank you both for trying to help me. I tried wha you suggested and
it didn't help. However I decided to shut down my firewall Zonealarm
and see if that had any affect. Lo and behold with the ZoneAlarm shut
down and then clicking on a .htm file the .htm file came up. I don't
know what there is in my firewall that would cause that problem since
the .htm file is in one of my directories on my hard drive. Doesn't
seem to make much sense to me. I will be fiddling around with setting
in the firewall until I can find which one is causing the problem. If
either of you have any ideas I could still use help. Thanks.

I don't know why but the problem in my firewall was tied to Power Desk
my File Manager program that I use instead of Windows Explorer. I
played around with some PD settings and ZoneAlarm and now it is
working and I am not exactly sure what it was even though I was going
one step at a time. The reason I said that is I changed everything
one step at a time and then changed it back after it started working
just to check and it continued to work... Don't ask me as I don't
have a clue...haha...

Thanks for the help and at least getting me started...

Glad to hear that you were successful! Kudos on tackling the problem
systematically. Too often people try to solve a problem by changing
things; then if no success, they leave the changes in place and make
more changes.
