Turned the pc on, windows log on screen comes up, type in
user name (never put password), hit enter, get error
message that "unable to log on, make sure user name and
password is valid". There's only been one name used for
this process, which has worked for a year, until today.
Tried reformatting, using original disk, it doesn't find
the harddrive. Says it's an invalid drive and therefore
won't reformat. The pc is networked to another, and the
other pc can access the shared files, but that's it. Any
ideas? Help please!

I tried the Administrator thing, it won't let me, gives me
a message that it's not allowed. As for the repair
install, if I can't log onto windows, how can I get to the
start menu?

1.. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot
order in the system bios. Check your system documentation for procedure to
access the bios and change the boot order to boot from CD.
2.. When you see the Welcome To Setup screen, do not choose to repair your
installation using the Recovery Console.
3.. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup program.
4.. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing
Windows installations.
5.. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press
R to start the repair.
6.. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your
applications and setting will remain intact.
7.. Reapply all updates after repair install.
