Hello,

I am unable to boot W2K after a restore. We have setup
vlan 3 as a test environment to recover an exchange 2000
server. The production servers are on a different VLAN.

I installed W2K server on the test machine and promoted it
to a DC. I then restarted the server and it boots well. I
re-started it again and chose "disaster recovery of Active
Directory". So far all is well. I then imported the
production DC server System backup and rebooted the test
server. The result is Windows hangs on the startup screen.
The test server is a Dell Poweredge 4600 and the
production server is an IBM e series.
Before importing the system state i enabled boot logging.
So i restarted it again to boot in safe mode and the
result is the same.
So at this point i reinstalled the os and did a detect and
repair ....the result is I blue screen. I also blue screen
in safe mode after i do a detect and repair.
I have copied the HAL from the test machine and installed
it after importing the system state without success.
I have read hundreds of technet documents and followed
them I think to the letter to no avail.
Can someone from Microsoft or any other company please
help me. Also chances are you will point me to a technet
document I have already read and tested and does not work.
Please can someone out there give any other ideas..

Much appreciate this,

There is one problem with what you did. Restoring a system state from
one machine to another machine almost never works. The reason is the
system state contains core Windows files and registry but does not
contain the software that was installed on the original server. The
registry is going to contain numerous references to the that software,
for example in your case we know it contains entries for Exchange. And
things like anti-virus are even more likely to cause serious problems.
You need to restore a full backup including C drive, not just a system
state.
