I have an interesting problem. I purchased XP
Professional nearly two years ago. I like it, however,
when I go to create an FTP profile while it prompts me
for a username, it doesn't prompt me for a password. I
was recently using a later version of XP and didn't have
this problem. Is there a patch to correct this problem?

Thank you,
Joel Stevey

What do you mean by create an FTP profile? You mean a profile on your
machine to connect to other FTP servers? Or are you running the FTP server
on XP and wanting to create a new user for that server?

What is the name of the software are you using to connect to other FTP
servers? The FTP client that is built in to XP is command line only and
doesn't have anything fancy like profiles. It is possible that the other XP
machine you were using has a newer version of whatever software you are
using, or maybe even a different program altogether. Usually the Help menu
will have an About item, or something similar, that can help you find the
web site for the software you have. You can then go to that site and check
for a newer version. Another option you have is finding out which program
the other XP computer you used had for FTP, and get that program instead.

I am using XP's Add Network Place Wizard. I had access to
a machince which had a later version of XP Professional
and it did not have this bug. It went ahead and prompted
me for a password. A tech had installed XP on a drive
which I later returned. Could he have use my product key
with another CD?

Perhaps you mean the profile assistant attached to IE?
that prompts username/password through the IE GUI?
if these are not sdaving or you are not being prompted to store the
password in your windows account.

Make sure you have the latest version of IE, restore IE defaults, make
sure autocomplete is turned on for password in Internet Properties

If I understand correctly this should resolve your Issue

Sorry for the delay. I checked around a dozen different XP machines with a
wide range of installed versions and fixes applied and did not find any that
had a password prompt on the same page as the username field when you go
through the Add Network Place Wizard. I checked with the test owner for the
Add Network Place Wizard to be sure, and he confirmed there isn't a way to
add the password when you add the username. However, when you connect to
the site, you have the option to check the save password checkbox and it
will save your password then. On all the versions I checked, I had the
option to save my password when I connected.

If you saw a password prompt in the wizard, before you clicked "Finish",
maybe the other computer had some kind of third party add-on that added
that. Did you mean that you did not have the checkbox to save your password
when you connected to the network place? If so, that was something
different than what I thought you meant and we can look at why that would
be.
