Unable to add SRV records

Hi,

I have setup a domain controller on a Win 2K advanced
server. This machine has two network cards and also acts
as a router to connect my internal network to the internet.

I setup MS DNS server on this machine, but the DNS
database does not seem to have any SRV records, as a
result of which i am unable to achieve Active Directory
replication with a backup domain controller. I have tried
following all of the KB articles i could find on the
subject, but have been unable to get the DNS server to
create the required records.

Please do guide me as to what steps are required to
resolve this problem.

Thanks

Jayant

1) Install the Server Tools from the AS Server CD
if you haven't already. (in \Support\Tools).

2) Make 100% sure that your DNS server is
pointing to it's own IP for DNS resolution in
TCP/IP properties, and to >NO OTHER IPs<.

3) Make sure your DNS zones are set to permit
dynamic updates ("secure-only" or "yes"). Check
both forward and reverse zones for this.

4) From a CMD prompt, run "netdiag /fix". This
will create the requisite, missing SRV records,
A second run should give no errors. If not, check
your event log post back the results.

All NICs should be pointing to the internal NIC for DNS, DNS must be
listening on that address, and your zone must allow dynamic updates.
Also the primary DNS suffix must match the AD domain name and both must
match the name of your zone.

In addition to Steve and Kevin's excellent suggestions, make sure the
Primary DNS SUffix of your machine is set to 'abc.com". That's found by
running an ipconfig /all and shown in the beginning of the results.

I'm also assuming that your domain name is NOT a single label name (such as
"abc" instead of the required 'abc.com' format). If so, that would cause
major issues.
