Unable to Add Service in Network Connections

Hi. Thanks for your help in advance.

Using XP Pro with an SBC DSL ISP using WAN Miniport
(PPPOE) and a Kingston EtherRX KNE111TX PCI Fast Ethernet
Adapter. Connects fine with internet. Problem is I can
not install a Service, Client or Protocol within Network
Connections.

When I try to install/add a Service from the "Select
Network Component Type" window after choosing Properties
Local Area Network (my ethernet card), I do not get the
usual next window "Select Network Service" but instead I
get the error message: "Could not add the requested
component. The error is: The system cannot find the file
specified." Prior to trying to add, I have installed the
Client for Microsoft Networks.

If I try to install/add a service from the "Select Network
Component Type" window to My ISP (my Wan Miniport
(PPPOE)) from the Properties/Networking tab, I get a
blank window under the "This connection uses the
following items" header. Prior to trying to add, I have
already installed Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and Client
for Microsoft Networks. I am now unable to access their
Properties. I removed, some time ago, the QoS Packet
Scheduler without any appearant change in function.

I'm thinking I caused this problem when I deleted some
registry entries, a couple which invloved an installed
Service in networking, called ProtoWall, instead of
uninstalling it from within Network Connections. Stupid!

When a network connection is acting up, a likely solution is to delete
the connection and re-create it.

If the network connection is associated with a physical network
adapter, go to Device Manager and remove the network adapter.

Has anyone found a solution for this issue?

I am experiencing the exact same symptoms and have found a number of posts in other forums which have been unsolved. I have tried deleting and recreating the connection. however, i am unable to install ANY device drivers. It all appears to be related. When I attempt to install a device driver, the wizard runs to nearly the end and then indicates an error occurred installing the hardware.

I have tried re-applying SP2, recreating the HKLM\software\Microsoft\windows\currentversion\DevicePath key; checkdsk, sfc... no luck.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

I am posting this soltuion because I have seen a number of users who have experienced this problem and have not seen one posting with the correct solution. The steps in the following link will fix this problem after a reboot. Particularly, steps 6 and 16.

I hope this saves someone from reinstalling XP.

solved try this

1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then press ENTER.
2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Network
3. Right-click this subkey, click Export, and then save the selected branch in a file.
4. Click the Network subkey again, and then delete the Config entry. Do not delete the Network subkey. The Config entry will be reconstructed when you restart the computer.
5. Restart the computer. You may have to manually turn off the computer.
