Yesterday I went to add some new address and other information to my contacts
folder in MS Outlook XP. When I finished adding the information I then
closed and saved the new contacts. When I went to check to see if the
information was stored in the contacts folder it was nowhere to be found. So
I tried adding it again and when I tried saving the information I got the
message that the information was already in the folder and did I want to
update the file. Strangely I can update information that is already in the
folder. I would appreciate any suggestions as to what might be going wrong.
I recently added MS Live OneCare to my system otherwise everything has been
pretty much the same since the last systems reload. Thanks for your time and
effort

Did you somehow set a filtered view on your Contacts folder that might be
hiding some items?

Dear Jocelyn,

I went to the help menu and cleared any and all filters. The problem
persists. I cannot add new names etc. to the contacts folder. I can modify
existing entries. As is usual with problems, I forgot to mention that I use
ABF Outlook Backup in order to keep files from being "lost" or wiped when I
reload the system. I have already tried a repair to MS Office but that still
hasn't changed anything. Do I need to setup separate folders, does the
program have a "size" limit? I would appreciate any suggestions from anyone
as to what I can do.

Yes, there are storage limits in Outlook 2002 and earlier versions
(technically there are storage limits in all versions, but Outlook 2003 and
later can handle more than just about anybody would throw at it). What size
is your .PST file overall? How many items are in the folder you're having
trouble with?

Dear Jocelyn,

I think I have created a very unpleasant can of worms. Here is the
situation, I have a USB hard drive on which I have stored files that I don't
want deleted if I have to reload the operating system. Fair enough. Also
this drive has Windows XP on it (the full operating system), however, I don't
boot from this drive and have no intention of doing so. It is a way of
keeping me out of trouble (I hope). When I searched this drive I found a
list of file all in c/Documents and Settings/Leonard M. Furst/Local
Settings/Application Data/Microsoft Outlook the file names include en_uk and
miguk which are associated with ViaVoice and archive files, one Outlook file,
and Part##0(up to 9) of Outlook0000. The files total approximately 300 KB
plus of data. I seem to have created a "black hole" which allows me to add
data but not to retrieve it. Can I save the information I have in the
address book and make sure that it operates from the C drive. The F drive
was initially the drive I used to check out my system. When I was sure
everything was working (This involved a low level format of a 320 GB
harddrive, not recommended for the faint hearted) I then put the operating
system on this drive. I have as stated above keep the OS on the F Drive (30
GB) so the question now is can I save the information currently in the
address book and will I have to remove the OS from the F drive? I am
assuming that I can get a print out of the address book which I can use to
manually restart the address book. Will I need to reload MS Office to make
sure that everything is alright? I am sorry to be such a bother about this
but I am anxious to make sure everything is working and that my address book
is fully functional and that the programs are all pointed in the right
direction. Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

OK, that was really confusing :-) But first things first...where is the
..PST file you're using in Outlook right now? To find out, right-click the
root folder of your Outlook Data File in the Outlook folder list, click
Properties, then Advanced. Your file path will be shown in the Filename box.
If it's on your C drive, you're good. If it's on the USB drive, hopefully
you can recover it by copying it to your hard drive...
