Unable to Acess Desktop Icons

i am un able to acess any files or programs located on the desk top or
select or highlight anything on the desktop. the files can be opened by using
other methods. is there a setting on the vista operating system that could
cause this problem?

It sounds like a problem with your profile. I would create a new ID and test
that. You can copy the old profile over if that fixes it.
