Started out my computer got very sluggish and kept hanging
up when on internet and on desktop. Ran Norton a few
times but progressively got worse over the course of
several hours. After I rebooted (hard) for the um-teenth
time, got an error message in dos "Invalid Boot.ini"
and "Invalid or corrupt \winnt\system32\config\system"
followed by a suggestion to insert my original Windows
setup CD and/or hit r to repair. Problem is my computer
now will not recognize my cd drive and even though I
finally found a bootable dos disc and I can access the A:\
drive with it, from there I cannot access my C:\ drive or
CD drive ("invalid"). Please help!??!

Sounds like some basic maintenance might be in order; consult a
knowledgable friend or competent technician.

As for the "system" error...
On restart getting error windows\sytem32\config\system.
missing this file on start up ?

Try a boot into Safe Mode, by hitting F8 just before the "Starting
Windows" screen would appear (takes a bit of practice).
Choose LAST GOOD.

If that does nothing, use a working PC to read this first...

If the problem persists, try swapping current RAM (even if it checks
good) for a single, high-quality 512Mb chip. XP reportedly is sensitive
to memory timing.
