I have a new Compaq desktop pc running XP Home with SP2. I cannot access
microsoft.com, windowsupdate.com, intuit.com, etc. I can access yahoo and
google. I spent 13 hours over the weekend "chatting" with Compaq support but
could not resolve the issue. We did a complete/destructive restoration of
the system and made numerous changes to IE settings but were unsuccessful.
We downloaded and installed Mozilla Firefox browser; the browser worked but I
still could not access the "secure" websites.

The pc also has Norton Personal Firewall and Norton Anti-Virus but they are
not enabled.

Is this an XP issue, IE issue, or hardware?
I would appreciate any suggestion the help me resolve this problem?

Hi,
Check the HOSTS file. Make sure that Windows is showing hidden files and is
not hiding file extensions for known file types then check for a HOSTS file
at [C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc] Open the HOSTS file with notepad. If
there are any redirect entries in it you can put the pound sign (#) in front
an entry to disable that redirect. Or you can rename the HOSTS file to
HOSTS.OLD to disable it.
More on the HOSTS file at http://www.accs-net.com/hosts/

Or, deleting the History and TIF folders may help:

Or, try opening a Cmd window (or from Start> Run) enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear the Temporary Internet Files and restart.

Try putting the problem sites in Trusted sites. From Internet Options>
Security> Trusted Sites> Sites> uncheck "Require server verification
(https:) for all sites" then add (for example) " *.microsoft.com "
(without the quotes) to this zone.

If running a cable modem, dsl modem or router, have you, at some point, shut
everything down for a few minutes? This sometimes helps.

Are you *sure* (for diagnostic purposes) that Norton and other security
programs are disabled?

Next... the shotgun approach. See if there's anything at these sites/pages
that you haven't tried.
