Unable to access Web folders

The folks in the Frontpage groups said I should post this
here. They were unable to offer any assistance. Below is
my problem:

I am working on an issue with Frontpage 2000 and web
folders. A few years ago I created a website with the 60
minute intranet kit. Users in my network have access via
web folders to publish content to the folders on the
intranet site. Everything has worked well for over two
years.

Recently when I try to create a web folder within windows
2000 pro the user gets the message: The folder you entered
does not appear to be valid. Please choose another. If the
user attempts to access a web folder that was previously
created they receive the message: You do not have
permission to access this web folder location.

I have also noticed that when I try to publish to the
website using Frontpage 2000 I receive the message: A web
does not exist at http:// <website name>> would you like
to create one. If I answer yes, it gives an error a web
site cannot be created and lists several reasons, all of
which do not appear to be valid.

I think the two problems are related. So far in my search
everything points to a user issue or a workstation issue.
I think it's a server issue since multiple users are
having the problem.

I have tried uninstalling / reinstalling the FP extensions
on the server and I have ran the web folder repair tool on
my 2000 machine. I have checked NTFS permissions on the
server folders and all the effected users have the proper
permissions.

Hello John,

Thanks for posting!

I am Jeff and I understand your issue to be:
You have created a web site on a Windows NT machine using IIS4.0 several
years ago.

It works well for several years and now it goes wrong.

When the client tries to connect to it via Web folder to upload something,
they get an error.

(I have reviewed the previous post in the microsoft.public.frontpage.client
queue ID:25767721)

If I have misunderstood your issue please let me know.

Based on your description, I would like you to confirm the following points:

1. Any software changes on that NT4 server? Any new
anti-virus/firewall/URLScan software or anything else installed?
If URLScan is installed, please check the following KB to make sure you did
not get webdav blocked.
309394 How to use URLScan with FrontPage 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=309394

2. Any new hardware installed between the NT server and the clients?

3. Can you access the web site correctly?

4. Can you connect to web folder locally on that NT machine?

Please confirm me the above points and we may go ahead to see how to fix it.

Try this KB on this NT 4 server as well:
287402 Troubleshooting Web Folders
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=287402

BTW, since the Windows NT 4 server is out of support for now, if possible,
I strongly suggest you upgrade this server to Windows Server 2003.

Hope this helps.

Please feel free to let me know if you have any further concerns or
questions regarding the issue.

Hi Jeff,
Thanks for the reply!
Here are the answers to your questions:

1. The server has remained pretty much untouched. Symantec
corporate edition AV is running on the server, but has
been for several years as well. Since the server hosts
documents we felt having AV software would be beneficial.
I vaguely remember running the IIS lockdown tool with URL
scan on this box, but again it would have been at least a
year or more ago, nothing has recently changed on the box.
About 5 months ago I moved the "home" directory of the web
site off of the "C" drive and moved it to the "E" drive of
the server. Again, no problems were noted immediately
after the move.

2. The server is five years old and retains the original
hardware configuration from when it was shipped. We are at
the end of migrating our client PC's from Windows NT to
Windows 2000. All the effected PC's are Windows 2000.
Since we have few NT Pc's I do not know if they are
affected.

3. The web site can be accessed normally by a web browser.
It serves as the company intranet server. However as I
mentioned when a user who does not administrator rights
accesses a document on the web site, they are prompted for
authentication. They cannot successfully authenticate, but
can click cancel and the document is displayed normally.

4. I am not sure what you mean by connect to a web folder
locally? I have a network share defined called "documents"
that is the root folder where all the web documents are
stored. I can reach this folder via its UNC path, but if I
try to create a web folder to it, I receive the error
mentioned earlier, that the folder name appears to be
invalid. In my Network Places, I had previously created a
web folder that connects to this "documents" folder. Now
if I click on this web folder shortcut it presents the
error: "You do not have permission to access this web
folder location."

I have previously reviewed the KB articles you presented.
KB 287402 mentions on the first stop not to perform this
step if you are running Windows 2000, so do I proceed to
part b of this step, or just move on to step 2, or should
I disregard the whole thing.

Since all my web folders users are having this problem, I
doubt all my Office installations suddenly went bad? The
above article deals with individual installations of
office.

I know Microsoft would like everyone to always run the
latest product offering, but that is not always possible.
I had previously tried to install the 60 minute intranet
kit on a Windows 2000 server box with IIS 5.0, but I had
issues with the asp pages running correctly, so I went
back to IIS4.0 / NT and it ran fine and has served us well
for over three years. I due have a new server, which
should be available early next year. I am worried if I
upgrade or move the site, the issue will simply follow the
new box.

Hi Jeff,

I'm the support engineer of IIS in the newsgroup. I've also reviewed
your previous threads. Since Web folder related is mainly an IIS
issue, I think we'd better to go ahead and perform some
troubleshooting at IIS side. Please do the following:

Reproduce the issue for several times by using FrontPage to 'open
web' to connect to the web folder.
Then please go to the IIS log directory to collect IIS log files:
\WINNT\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC[n] (n is the site number)

Please attach the log in your thread and I will help on checking it
to find clues.

I'm waiting for your reply. Thanks.

Hi WenJun,

I seem to be having a problem with my post alias. This is
(e-mail address removed). When I log in it now recognizes me by an old
alias, "Rushed" that I used a few years ago. Also I noticed the user group
reader software has a different look. HAs technet changed. I was gone for a
week on vacation so I would like to pick up this issue again.

Anyway I have read your comments below. I was able to access the site via
Front Page's open Web option by typing the URL to the web folder. It was only
sucessfull one time. Subsequent attempts simply displayed nothing after I
clicked the OK button. However FP will open the web via it's UNC path over
the network. I have the log file you mention but don't see any way to attach
it.

Please advise.

Thanks!
