Unable to Access Secure Websites

G

Guest

This is a follow-up to my 3/15 6:24 post.

I can't logon to various websites from my home machine (XP Home SP1) such as
this one, Hotmail or AOL Instant Messenger. I've run a slew of anti-spyware
programs (CWShredder, Spybot, Anti-Spyware, Adware, Hijack This and Spy
Sweeper, as well as TCP/IP repair programs xp-smoker and spy checker). I've
cleared the cache and as far as I can tell, have no BHOs. Best as I can
determine, I've disabled any firewall. Still, I can't log into these sites.
This changes however when I start the machine in safe mode with network
connections. At that point I have no problem.

Any ideas what in my startup (or elsewhere) may be causing my problem?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I'm still stuck. Aside for all the
anti-spyware stuff, have cleared the cache, checked for a HOST file (isn't
any), deleted my profile, added hotmail.com to my trusted sites and been
through the various help links. Still am unable to access Hotmail or AOL

Thanks. Will take a fresh look when I get home. Don't think it's an AOL/IE

seem related to a recent hijacking since everything was fine previously.

Okay, I've gotten AIM to work. Inside the product, past the connections
button there is an automatic configuration choice. Selected that and it's
working. Issue remains can't access secure sites. I've been through all the
suggested fixes w/out any luck.

However, I've noticed something different going on w/ Hotmail versus the
e-commerce sites. When I try and log on to Hotmail, the red restricted sites
icon appears at the bottom. When I look through the list of such sites, I
don't see anything that looks like hotmail, msn, passport, etc. Yet when I
try and add the site to my trusted sites, yes I'm told this site is already
listed in a different zone. If this is the issue great but how do I find and
delete the restriction?

Accessing commercial sites seems to be a different issue (though the symptom
is the same -- "page cannot be displayed") in that the restricted site icon
never appears.

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

determine, I've disabled any firewall. Still, I can't log into
these
sites.
This changes however when I start the machine in safe mode with
network
connections. At that point I have no problem.

Any ideas what in my startup (or elsewhere) may be causing my
problem?

Thanks,
Jonathan

Hi Jonathan :)

'k..try these suggestions and see if they help. Not sure what is happening.
If you are still having problems with secure sites, then maybe something
here will help, or spur a thought of something you haven't checked yet.

Go to the Windows update site and have it scan for any missing critical
updates that may be causing this problem.

Go to 'Tools>Internet Options>Advanced tab. Scroll down to HTTP settings.
Uncheck use HTTP 1.1 and check 'use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections'
Click 'O.K then close and re-open I.E.

Also, are you on dialup, DSL or cable? Do you use a router? I don't recall
seeing you mention if you did. If so, check your router setting and see if
the MRU is set to 1400 and see it that helps.

Also, if it applies try this: Tools>Internet Options>Connections>LAN
Settings>Advanced>and in the box labeled "exceptions" put in "https://"
(without the quotes!). That should exclude proxy operations from nearly ALL
secure sites. If you put in a specific
site, this will exclude just that site, but if you put in just the part
specified above, that will exclude ANY site that uses the https addressing
scheme.

Check all your cable connections and hookups to modem, router, machine and
anything else that might apply is in the right sequence.

Check all security and ActiveX settings in your AV, anti-spyware programs,
3rd party toolbars, Privacy, Internet and Trusted Zones are set correctly.
Check your firewall for settings and ActiveX blockers.

Go to Tools/InternetOptions/Privacy tab/and then click the Sites tab. Remove
any Domains under Managed Websites that had to do with MSN or MSN Messenger
or MSN Hotmail. These may be blocked cookies. After removing any of these
items, restart IE and see if you can access Hotmail.

Uninstall and reinstall MSN Messenger 6 through Add/Remove programs. (Not
the beta version)

Do you have SpyBot Search & Destroy? Check the following there under Tools
(Advanced Mode) and see if there is anything related to any of the sites you
can't access. When you highlight an item, it gives details about. If you
find anything, remove it or set to ignore.

HOSTS
ActiveX
Opt Out

If you have SpywareBlaster, check the Internet Explorer tab Block list and
see if there is anything there that looks like the sites you are trying to
access. Remove it or set to ignore. Also, check the Restricted Sites tab
and see if there is anything there, if so, remove or ignore. Check under
the Tools and click the Flash Killer tab and make sure it's unchecked.

If you have McAfee, there are issues. See here:

Disable the McAfee ActiveX controls Applet filters in the Internet Filter
window when you select Customize your VShield settings

"Your current security settings prohibit running Active X controls on this
page. As a result pages may not display correctly."
http://www3.telus.net/dandemar/acxen.htm
or
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN;Q319585&LN=EN

Here are a few others, although I'm not sure they may apply:

- Go to IE6 Tools/Internet Options/Privacy tab, then click Edit. enter
"hotmail.com" and
then click the Allow tab. Evidently there is a Hotmail problem with privacy
settings/corrupted cookies.

- Check in Internet Explorer under Tools/Internet Options/Security that the
user has not changed the password setting from 'prompt for username and
password' to
'anonymous logon' in Internet Zone. The option setting for anonymous logon
may cause the
error.

Other possibilities here:

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers2.htm#secure_sites

That is about all that I can think of at this time. If you are certain
there's no scumware on your system, then there must be something either
blocking it, or a setting off somewhere. It could be a number of things.

Hope this helps :)

Okay, I've gotten AIM to work. Inside the product, past the connections
button there is an automatic configuration choice. Selected that and it's
working. Issue remains can't access secure sites. I've been through all
the
suggested fixes w/out any luck.

However, I've noticed something different going on w/ Hotmail versus the
e-commerce sites. When I try and log on to Hotmail, the red restricted
sites
icon appears at the bottom. When I look through the list of such sites, I
don't see anything that looks like hotmail, msn, passport, etc. Yet when
I
try and add the site to my trusted sites, yes I'm told this site is
already
listed in a different zone. If this is the issue great but how do I find
and
delete the restriction?

Accessing commercial sites seems to be a different issue (though the
symptom
is the same -- "page cannot be displayed") in that the restricted site
icon
never appears.

As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jonathan :)

In that case, try running a repair as well. Some things can get broken
or
corrupted with removal of malware and it's kissin' dozens. :)

Thanks. Will take a fresh look when I get home. Don't think it's an
AOL/IE
compatability issue however. Unless it's a wicked coincidence, my
problems
seem related to a recent hijacking since everything was fine
previously.

Hi Jonathan :)

MSN, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc. should all be treated the same as secure
sties.
You may have your security settings set too high, and check your
firewall,
and Zone Alarm if you have it. If you have Yahoo Companion, uninstall
it.
Disable any 3rd party toolbars or popup blockers.

Somethimes IE and AOL don't like to play well together. Other
programs
such
as firewalls and such can also cause this kind of problem. Check the

Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I'm still stuck. Aside for all
the
anti-spyware stuff, have cleared the cache, checked for a HOST file
(isn't
any), deleted my profile, added hotmail.com to my trusted sites and
been
through the various help links. Still am unable to access Hotmail
or
AOL
instant messenger unless I've started in Safe Mode with Networking.

This is a follow-up to my 3/15 6:24 post.

I can't logon to various websites from my home machine (XP Home
SP1)
such
as
this one, Hotmail or AOL Instant Messenger. I've run a slew of
anti-spyware
programs (CWShredder, Spybot, Anti-Spyware, Adware, Hijack This
and
Spy
Sweeper, as well as TCP/IP repair programs xp-smoker and spy
checker).
I've
cleared the cache and as far as I can tell, have no BHOs. Best
as I

This changes however when I start the machine in safe mode with

problem?
