So my laptop broke christmas day (integrated power supply
went U/S). I took the HDD out and using an external USB
drive kit with a 44-40 pin IDE adapter i've connected the
old HDD to my new computer as an external drive. I can
navigate through and read files on the drive with the
exception of my "My Documents" folder which holds about 5
Gb worth of data i NEED. The error message i get
indicates insuficient rights. I assume this is because
the folder was blocked other users from viewing it and
now being hooked up externally i am not. Is there a was
in which i can access these files. I attempted connecting
the drive internally and using it as the bootable drive
but windows crashed. Any suggestions?

This article describes how to take ownership of a file or folder
