I set up a home network almost 2 years ago. It has been
running perfectly until Monday. I have 4 computers ,2
with xp home, one with me and one with 98. Foe some
reason, one of the ones with xp, cannot access the
internet. I have searched and tried many things,
including selecting an ip address. I can configure the
computer to communicate with all the other computers on
the network, but it will not connect to the internet. I
use msn, and as soon as I type my password, I get a
message that it is trying to sign in (attempt 2) then
unable to log on. The cables are fine, the other three
computers are fine, I tried switching sockets on the
router, but nothing works. I have a netgear router and
use a dsl line from verizon. This happened when I turned
on the computer Monday morning. No new software etc. I
have tried some registry changes, restoring to a past
date, nothing. I can oping that computer as well as the
others. Any ideas out there? Thanks in advance

The 1st thing I would try is plug the DSL directly into the XP machine that
can't connect. Try to connect and see what happens. If you can connect,
it's not the XP machine. If you can't, I would point to the router.

Are you unable to access any site or just msn? I've been
having a similar problem about not connecting to msnbc,
but I can get to anywhere else.

I saw in one of the newsgroups (can't recall which one)
that roadrunner and aol users (didn't mention Verizon DSL)
are having trouble connecting to Microsoft sites. It's
possible that Microsoft is doing something on their end to
block the traffic - possibly due to the various virus'
running around right now.

The help desk at roadrunner has heard about this before,
but they don't have any current warnings about it. I've
opened a ticket with them - if I get useful info, I'll
followup.

In the meantime...

Can you do a tracert (trace route) to www.msn.com?

If you can get to msn domain it may be on their end, not
yours.

BTW - I tried a few other things.

You can reset your IP stack by running the following:
netsh int ip reset c:\ipreset.log
(windows XP doesn't allow you to uninstall/reinstall
TCP/IP, so this is the next best thing)

And you can clear your dns resolver cache doing the
following.

ipconfig /flushdns

Thanks for suggestions . I had already tried them but
did again anyway. As a desperate measure, I uninstalled
MSN8. I was able to get online using IE. Then reinstalled
MSN8 and everything seems fine now. Not sure why, but
something in MSN8 must have gone haywire. Thanks again
for help; I will use this board in the future.
