Unable to access IE

Have been unable to access IE, am only getting the "The Page Cannot be
Displayed" page. My OE E-mail works fine, and a few sites work that are
"secure" (banks and credit union). Nothing else works. I have spent a great
deal of time with my ISP on the phone, no success.
I do notice on the IE Options General tab, under home page, the default has
the following:
Also, when I click the "use blank" tab, the words "about:blank" come up,
which worries me a bit. Is this normal? (I recall my son had a problem with
the "about:blank" virus on his computer.)
Any suggestions?

HELP!!! I cannot access IE either. Tonight I was notified that a McAfee update was available. I successfully installed it, then went to IE as usual. Except - I couldn't get it loaded in. I double-click on the IE icon, it goes to the opening default screen for about 4 seconds, without loading in anything, then snaps back to the MS landscape screen that I get when I turn my computer on. I chatted with a McAfee person and followed his steps and he decided it was not a McAfee problem. I ran a scan and came up clean. I Removed McAfee Virus Scan from the Add/Remove screen. Still can't get into it. Any ideas? I have XP Home ed., Service Pack 2, MS Windows Version 5.1 Thanks for any help.

Have you tried " System Restore ? Start/programs/accessories/system

about:blank is the normal listing if you want a blank home page. Yes, there
is some malware that mimics it but that is not the problem in your case.

Well, it's now working! I did a system restore as suggested by A E. This
didn't help, but, I noticed in the immediate recovery after that, MS
Antispyware notified me of something trying to access the system. It was
Google Web Accelerator, which I have been trying for a couple of months now.
I disabled that, and IE now works fully.
I was unable to access of course the sites suggested by you Frank, because
the web wasn't working, and I didn't have immediate access to another
computer, but I will now print off your E-mail, with the sites listed, and
put it in my "solutions" file, for next time.
Thanks for all the suggestions! Sometimes a roundabout way gets you there.
One thing that's a mystery is that through all this, the Bank sites
continued to work fine!
