Unable to access hard drive

After having problem with booting into windows, i have purchased new hdd and
reinstalled windows onto that. I have installed the old drive as 2nd drive
hoping to get at programs/ documents i need. However, although drive is
showing in BIOS & on computer mgt screens I cannot access it. On the mgt
screen it is online & shown as unallocated (whatever that means).
Is the drive 'dead' or is there something else i have to do?
the drive is Maxtor SATA & OS is XP.

Hi PJ
Make the second drive a logich drive,
right mouse on the drive.
