I'm unable to access my documents after re-installing XP into separate
folder after original XP installation got corrupt.
Tried to copy files from existing folder but get access denied
message.
You need to take ownership of the files. You'll need to make sure the
account you currently log on with has administrative privileges on the
machine.
If using XP Pro, disable simple file sharing. To do that open Explorer
and select Tools, Folder Options and go to the View tab. Scroll all
the way down in the list of advanced settings and remove the check from
"Use simple file sharing (Recommended)."
If using XP Home, boot into Safe Mode.
Right click on your old profile directory under Documents and Settings
and select Properties. Go to the Security tab and click the Advanced
button. On the Owner tab click your current profile name in the
"Change owner to" list, make sure that "Replace owner on subcontainers
and objects" is checked, and click Apply. Once the process finishes
you should then be able to get whatever files you need from your old
profile directory.
