I recently have encountered this problem. I download a program, such
as Google Taskbar, but then cannot locate where the download went. I
look in My Documents, but it is not there? Any suggestions?

You should see where it went when you are offered the chance to pick a
folder when asked to Save or Run.
Try starting the download again and take notice of where it is going.

Hi Steve,
Adding to Alan Suggestions, try to Press the Download Link from where you
did the Download before and when you represented with the Download POP Up
window |RUN | Save | Cancel | see the name of the Folder or the Application
which will be downloaded and write it down, then cancel the download, you do
not need to end up with two Applications on your Desktop.
Then try the Search and locate the application, and Install it.
Hope this helps

It seems to be downloaded to My Documents but never shows up there. It
doesn't show up anywhere in search it seems to just vanish after the
download.

Hi Steve,
Try to open Windows Explorer and Clcik on Tools >> Folder Options and there
Click on View Tab and Scroll down to Hidden Files and Folders and Tick or
select the Show Hidden Files and Folders, Close and Click F5 (Refresh) and go
to Windows Explorer agin and see if the File Visible there.
If it is Install it and Then Delete the Installation Folder.
Don't forget to Reset back to Do Not Show Hidden Files and Folder again ( in
case Success or no Success.
Hope this Helps

I'm also getting the same problems, but only recently, which makes me wonder
if an update has disabled something in IE.

The download dialog box appears, the progress bar moves along nicely - gets
to the end and nothing.
I've searched hidden files and folders, ticked the folder option box to show
hidden files and nothing. The downloaded file simply doesn't exist, as
Windows Explorer returns nothing found.

However, I can download using a 3rd party download manager, such as
Flashget, so it's got me foxed. I had thought that the Anti Virus software
might be at fault, so I uninstalled and reinstalled, but no change. Nor is it
quarantining the files on download either.

Given the fact that no solution seems forthcoming, and that this problem
seems to be quite prevalent (judging by other help forums), I've had to
switch to Firefox.
I guess that with the IE7 development, nobody really wants to address issues
with IE6 - which is a shame, as it's probably one of the most widely used
browsers.

In case it's any help to others, I can say that Firefox downloads perfectly
- unlike my current version of IE6. IE6 still downloads and loses the file,
whilst Firefox performs admirably - and dare I say it, a little faster than
IE did as well.

And that's not a plug for Firefox - I'll update to IE7 as soon as I know
it's 'glitch' free, but for the moment anyone with similar problems might
want to consider switching to a different browser.

Note to Microsoft - great products, great ease of use - but we haven't all
got time to uninstall/reinstall parts of Windows or ('shudder') have to
reinstall Windows altogether.

Hope IE7's an improvment.

As you don't supply details of a problem, some will find it hard to
give a solution.
Please supply details (possibly without reference to FF or IE7 may
help some of us who do not use either)

Hi Alan

I did give the details on 20/06/06, in this topic, but I've copied it below
as well:

'I'm also getting the same problems, but only recently, which makes me wonder
if an update has disabled something in IE.

Any help would be appreciated, as I really would rather use IE6 as my
default browser. And I've followed the instructions before, uninstalled and
reinstalled and still the same problem.
Like I said in the previous post, it really has me foxed, as everything else
(including Firefox) is downloading Internet content with no problem at all.
But I just can't locate anything downloaded with IE. The most I've ever
found is a shortcut, which when I click on tells me it's unable to locate
target.
I'm running Windows Defender, as well as scanning regularly with Spybot and
Adaware, so I don't think there's any malware affecting IE. Certainly no
viruses reported by AVG, or Panda's online scan either.
I've tried clearing the cache, allocating extra space for Internet files,
but nothing seems to make any difference.

It just really has me beat, and because of the nature of the problem, it's
impossible to send an error report (which would probably be a lot more
helpful for Microsoft).

Anyway, many thanks for replying, and I hope the above information proves
useful. It's just a really frustrating problem, when any other bit of
software seems to work fine.

Thanks in advance for any help.

OK. You say you see the download box but don't you see the Open, Save
and Cancel boxes? If you select Save, you should have the option of
choosing a folder to save the file. You should not then have to search
for the file.

If you do not see the option to choose a folder to download into...

You set this for each file type, e.g. for .zip
Windows Explorer-Tools-Folder Options-File Types
Find the .zip association (may be WinZip File)
Edit, (or click Advanced on ME or XP) and check the "Confirm open
after download" box

The path to Folder Options may vary according to your operating
system. It may be:
Windows Explorer-View-Folder Options
Windows Explorer-Tools-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Folder Options
Start-Settings-Control Panel-Folder options.

Alan, I am having the same problem as the poster above. When I download
a file, I get the Open/Save/Cancel prompt. If I open it, nothing it.
If I save it, I choose a folder, the progress bar increases to
completion, and then the dialog dissapears. Searching for the file
yields nothing. This exists even though the 'Confirm file after
download' option is checked.

This sounds like the same problem I was having. Uninstalling DefenderII
solved the problem. Let me know if it helps you.
