Un-intalling few programs

Hi

I am running Xp pro.
I downloaded a program from Internet caliming to be increasing the speed of
machine. I installed it. It went well. But I understood that program is
useless.

Now, I go to Add/remove programs and try to remove it, it says successfully
removed.

When I go to Stat->Programs, I still the same program and when I select it,
it runs again.

So, my question is: Is there any utility for XP, which allows user to remove
unwanted stubborn programs forcibly and SAFELY. ( meaning registery is
modified but not corrupted )

There is no such thing as a free lunch, if it sounds too good to be
true then it probably is :-)

Sounds remarkably like a virus/trojan/worm - are you running a virus
checker? You should also look at Ad Aware and Spybot search and destroy.

Ad Aware is at www.lavasoft.de SpyBot is at
http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html they are both free and well
regarded.

It would also be worth Googling for the name of the program you
downloaded, that may lead you to removal instructions.
 
You might have some luck with Start>Run>msconfig. Go to the Startup tab and
look for the program. Uncheck it and reboot the machine.

Apart from the suggestions already given you might consider getting some
registry cleaner (like RegCleaner eg.) that might help you to get rid of
entries in the registry associated with that program to be uninstalled, when
te un-install procedure does not satisfy you.
This will involve you in getting more intimate with the registry and how it
is used by programs.
You'll have to tred lightly and not have such registry cleaners (including
RegCleaner) do all the things they can without you examening what it is they
want to do, so I'd suggest to have them present you a list of what's in the
registry, look for the obvious references to the program at hand (like
entries mentioning the program name or the company name) and then manually
select the entries you want removed.
This is not a fool proof method to get everything removed and it will often
still leave remnants in the registry, because they are not obviously
associated with that program (CLSID GUID type entries are notorious in that
respect), but it may be better than leaving everything in there.

And since you're running XP, ALWAYS make a manual System Restore point
before engageing in such endevours so you can at least get back to 'normal'
if you happen to mess up.

If you tell us the name of the program and where you
downloaded it, somebody may have some better advice. But
often you need to uninstall these "rogue" programs in safe
mode or even from the recovery console so that the program
has not started, which will prevent it from being removed by
Windows.
