I can't get XP to recognize the scanner through the
parrallel port. I see the device icon on the task bar but
it crashes XP. I have a Dell 4600. I have tried changing
the bios to EPP. Any help would be great.

Check the UMAX web-site, I think you will find that it is incompatible with
XP. I'm pretty sure it is the same model scanner I had to scrap when I went
to XP.

I went to the site and found, there is now software available for your
scanner.
You will have to order it on CD. It was not available back when I went to
XP.

I had the same problem. I posted the following to this ng on 11/11/03:

{{Thanks to previous posters pointing to
http://www.driverscollection.com/?H=Astra 1220P&By=Umax where there is a
file vs355p.exe giving a ver. 3.55 driver for this scanner which works with
Win XP (for me anyway).

Only thing missing is the MagicMatch gizmo for automatically tailoring the
colour balance to suit different printers: the install routine stops at
about 90%, so I guess MM is in the last 10% (can't find any likely files,
though). Does anyone know how to rescue MagicMatch? Not vital, but it
would be nice to get it back.

(I have the disc that came with the 1220p, with driver ver. 2.1, which used
to provide magicmatch for my Epson Photo1200 printer, with good results in
Win98, but that too stops after about 90% of the instal, and unlike the
ver.3.55 download, it doesn't work at all with XP.)

Thanks,
TM}}

Hope this is useful to you. Btw, my question about MagicMatch still stands.

PS: After sending that (!) I went to the Umax site
http://www.umax.co.uk/support/default.htm and under "Windows XP info" you
can download driver ver. 3.55 for the 1220P. There is also some advice
about getting MagicMatch loaded from the original driver disc (scroll down
below the German version), which I hope answers my question, but I haven't
tried it yet. None of this was there a few weks ago.

Thanks, but I ordered the new 3.55 CD from UMAX and the
support guys gave up when my XP started crashing. We
couldn't see the device in the device manager. And when we
scanned for new devices XP didn't find it. He suggested I
call Microsoft.

I did a bunch of things but basically this is what I did.
I uninstalled the Vistascan software and rebooted. Then I
reinstalled the software and went into device manager. It
said "unknown device" under "Imaging devices" so I tried to
update driver using the patch that UMAX gave me. It failed
with a "The class installer has denied the request to
install or upgrade this device". So I picked the Astra
1220S instead. And that worked but of course it couldn't
find the device. Then I updated it to the Astra 1220P.
That worked although I got a "This device cannot start
(code 10)" error. So I tested the scanner and it works fine.
The device manager has a yellow "!" over the device and it
does not list under "Cameras & Scanners" in Control Panel.
But at least its working. Any advise on where to go from
here?

I have an Astra 1220S (scsi connection) which also seemingly didn't have an XP version of the VistaScan software available for it.
I found out on another forum that you can use the Umax "Magic Scan v4.3" with it, which is the software they supply with their high-end scanners - it works perfectly under XP, and offers much better features than VistScan. I can't remember which Umax site I managed to download this from, but the UK site didn't seem to want to let me.
