Ultra Wierd Mouse Problem

I use a PS-2 wheel mouse. Drivers are the latest
available.

When I power up my system, everything works fine.
However, if I soft boot the system (using "restart" or the
reset button), the system does not recognize the mouse at
all. If, after soft booting, I access Device Manager via
keystrokes, the category "Mice and other pointing devices"
is not even present. If I then power the system down
completely and power it back up, everything is fine again.

Anyone seen this before?

Thanks!

The only things that come to mind are reinstalling the mouse driver,
and seeing if XP has any suggestions in the Help area troubleshooter..

Has the mouse ever worked successfully with XP, with respect to
working after a restart rather than a fresh boot?

Sounds like you might have a conflict between your motherboards plug and
play and XPs plug and play. I had a CD Rom that would do what your mouse is
doing. If it is a new mobo, check to see if they have a bios update. That
could be the solution you need. Also, a cheap workaround might be to get a
PS2 to USB adaptor and use your mouse via a USB port.
