Greetings all and a very *Merry Christmas*,

Just a quick post as I am busy opening presents, eating loads, watching
films on TV etc. . .I've been seeing lots of adverts for this mega PC-World
*One Day Sale* on Boxing day. Possibly tempted to go down to my local
branch (Wandsworth) early to see if there are any bargains. Has anybody
here in the U.K been to one of these *sales* before?

I'm dreaming of AMD CPU's for £20.00 and stuff like that :P

....visions of sugar-plums?

I wouldn't hold out much hope of that happening. Maybe DVD+R writers which
are normally £180 will be £120 while the same model is £60 or under online.

What makes me laugh about PC Hurled is the 'managers specials' section.
Things like two year old scanners and printers with no boxes, cables or
software for a bargain fiver off the original retail price. My local branch
not long ago had Geforce 2 Ultras, the cards on their own in bubble wrap for
£79 each!

There's no such thing as a bargain at PC World.

Wiv u there, always a good giggle to look at the discount section with 10%
off original retail price of damaged goods from years ago.

I suppose you have to look and think at just how savvy their buyers are.
Most of us that post here wouldn't use them but then again I would guess
that most of their customers might not know that Usenet even exists.

The PC World kind of shopper probably views them as they also view Dixon's /
Comet etc where they are often situated near, not thinking that they could
buy any where else cheaper.

Still I have used them when they priced matched a digital camera once and I
used to buy the odd bundle of Photo paper until I discovered just how cheap
printing was online.

PC World in Luton is situated a stone's throw away from a branch of
Watford Electronics.

Wonder how many times someone in PC world goes, "sorry sir, they're out of
stock at the moment but you might like to try Watford Electronics."

I've heard bad things about Watford Electronics but can't quite remember
what they were.

On offer when I walked in there christmas eve....

AMD Athlon XP2000+ for under £40

Sony int DVD +/- RW Retail boxed for £99

HIS Radeon 9600 pro reduced from £141 to £99.98

Mine also had Athlon Thoroughbred XP2600+'s which were actually Barton's
(and unlocked to boot, low turnover of these?)

nothing too much I could see that merited 'bargain'

Lol! You're talking about a Dixons Stores Group chain. The advertising is
targeted at TV watching numpties, not clued-up folk. If you're expecting
computer show prices, you're going to be disappointed.

In fairness, I got a load of photographic paper from them a couple of weeks
ago, but only because their POS system had f*cked up and it was priced at
£4.99 a pack instead of £24.99. ;-)

'There' now ... dont you feel better ???

A 'public' catharsis does wonders for one's soul , 'esp' at Xmas.

MC&HNY,
Qed.

PS- I am left somewhat to 'wonder' ... your term "POS" ...
.. Point of Sale, or ... Piece of Shit ???

Printing online or purchasing consumables online?

Printing online at...

www.photobox.co.uk

The price that they charge and the quality that is really good means that
home printing is very costly and no longer worth doing if you have broadband
to upload the images :)

Well they did have Nvidia 5900 cards for £95 quid, which isn't too bad. They
sold out in the first 30 mins though so I missed out.

But they ****ed up and put an HIS 9200 sku code on an HIS 9600, so I got it
for £68 inc which was pretty reasonable.

Hi,
well I had a good look around and didn't see anything jawdropping!. They
had Epson Photo Paper (50sheets) for £9.99, a cool Samsung Laser printer for
£49.95 (I paid £79.95 for same model two weeks ago). . .that was about it ^^

It's funny how some people *react* to PC-World. Sure I know its a general
high street store, but sometimes they have things for sale that are cheaper
than anywhere else, and yes I can research a bargain as good as anyone
here!. You just have to *know* what you are looking for. I would say 95%
of the PC-World stock is overpriced, but there is still 5% bargains to be
had, plus I like the fact that if you get in a jam and need something quick
(cable, paper, etc) you can just pop in. Same goes for Micro Anvika
(Tott.Crt.Rd W1).

Anyway if anyone knows of some *U.K* based sales. bargains etc please post a
heads up in this newsgroup. .

While we're on the subject, why is it that every American high street seems
to have a well-stocked computer store where any kind of component is
available on the shelf - while in this country, the only store that stocks
more than a couple of old has-been products from four years ago is PCWorld
..... not that their stock is particularly jaw-dropping (other than in
price).
I suspect is simply just another manifestation of rip-off Britain.
In the States, shops can afford to stock their shelves, while here you need
a mortgage for even the humblest components - no wonder the retail market is
all online.

Hi,
well that was my feeling. After reading these *Global* newsgroups for so
many year, I am always seeing good deals for out USA buddies, but we are
sooo behind in that sense. I guess they have such a larger *OC enthusiast
population its not a problem for these stores to get a big stock.

Not only are we (U.K) tiny (population wise) compared to the Americans, but
I guess we don't have that many *tweakers*, that makes us the small
percentage. . .
