A show I'm developing now (2003), had a background track called "track.wav".
The track got modified and new track is called "mix.mp3"
I couldn't find any way to change the file name and/or path of the sound
object (btw that seems pretty basic, surprised the PP product group missed
that) so I deleted the sound object and inserted a new one to the new sound
file.

I get no sound playback. The sound object is there, it's setup exactly as I
had the other one. It just never plays. What's causing this?

All MP3s are NOT created equal. What did you use to create it and which
codec did you use?

Well why not?
Hmm, no clue, it is supplied by a sound pro.
Do I need to request something specific to please the inner workings of the
PP?

Ok, just emailed him. He has 12 of them, for this he used Lame. He said he
would try Windows and send me that.

Lame stands for... Lame ain't An Mp3 Encoder. Well, at least at one time.

The thing of it is that the MP3 "standard" has drifted quite a bit with at least a dozen different codecs out there and you must have the right one(s) installed on your machine for PPT to be able to use them.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - If you are using Office 2003, you should install this
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello David,

Regarding your comment ["I couldn't find any way to change the file name
and/or path of the sound object (btw that seems pretty basic, surprised the
PP product group missed that)"], PowerPoint does not have the specific
capability that you are looking for although are 3rd party solutions and
VBA workarounds.

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that PowerPoint should
provide link management for more than just OLE linked objects (without have
to resort to VBA or 3rd party add-ins), don't forget to send your feedback
to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also why it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions)
