Is there any way to turn off UAC, but without having the nagging
notification on the taskbar afterwards?
 
To turn off UAC go to Control Panel > Classic View > User Accounts and click
'Turn User Account Control on/off'.

To prevent the security pop-up in the System Tray, right-click the red
shield (or Control Panel > Classic View > Security Center) and click 'Change
the way Security Center......' then choose 'Don't notify me and
don't........'.

You don’t have to turn UAC off, you can stop the prompt without UAC losing
its security strengths, in Vista Home Basic and Vista Home Premium click the
Windows Orb (Start), type regedit, press Enter and navigate to registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System
and change the value of ConsentPromptBehaviorAdmin to 0 (zero) from 2.

If you don't get the prompts, what's the benefit of keeping it
running?
 
Fantastic BurrWalnut, that is simply fantastic! Never a session goes by
without that effing annoying b*****d notification popping up. Already opened
a few things that used to be hindered by this, has made for a much more
fluid running of my desktop!
 
Nonny has a good point - keep in mnd that you have actually OKd any action
that would require admin ID or credentials - you will not receive any
"warning" of alteration of the registry or system files via IE Protected
Mode.
 
On a restart, I got the usual nagging red shield in the taskbar. Maybe that

It would have been nice if you included the material you were replying
to. The cure for that wasn't a registry hack:

Another cut and paste jockey. Well Bubba, let me tell you. After
reading some KB article I made some internal system changes to alter
how UAC behaves. I followed the steps exactly. Ever since Vista being
the pile of crap it is, if you look in Control Panel it will correctly
tell you that UAC is turned on. Yet the moronic pile of crap Vista is
it also will pop up a Window saying UAC isn't on and that I should
turn it on. So much for the Boys of Redmond programming skills.
