Is there anything freeware like streets and trips, mappoint, or delorme
street atlas? Anything that will run on windows? You wouldn't believe
how bloated those monopolyware are!

Probably offtopic, but highly recommended: USAPhotoMaps

The program is free, but it encourages users to make a voluntary donation,
to the point of being nagware. The nag is displayed when you exit the
program. I like it, I use it, but it doesn't qualify as pure freeware.
Consider it an option only if no genuine freeware offerings meet your
needs.

This page lists software that works with Garmin GPS units. You'll probably
find similar lists for other units, if you poke around the site a bit.

Several others are listed as freeware, but I haven't tried any other than
USAPhotoMaps, so I can't vouch for their status a pure freeware, either.

I just downloaded this program the other day. Very nice. A little bit of a
learing curve. You can import waypoints from your GPS (tracks and routes
too) and overlay them on top of Arial or Topo maps - downloadable through
the program from the web.
It does not come with map sets like Garmin's MapSource or MS Streets and
Trips. I have not seen anything to rival those programs that is free.

Sam

Here's another that does include map sets (streets and highways):

Will be trying it soon.

Interesting: http://www.bdt.com/david/carnav.html

I live in a city where there are so many trees you can't find anything.
It's part of the city code to chop down as few trees as possible (which
is nice). So I want to start marking way points to every place I go
that I would like to return to. At least that's the idea for now.
Hmmm.. this idea could apply even if there weren't so many trees.

I had it talking with my gps receiver, but I couldn't get it to zoom in
past world view. Map resolution was lousy. I would rather use payware.
