Using PPT 2003 is it possible to type vertical text without having the MUI
function operational. I know I can type a letter, enter, type, enter and so
on and get something like this
P
O
W
E
R

P
O
I
N
T
but I'd like to be able to click the CHANGE TEXT DIRECTION icon from the
formatting tool bar as it describes in the MS PPT Help. Thanks.

Hi,

Note: this was introduced in PowerPoint 2007 where it is easy to do.

I looked in 2003 and I don't get the option either. Now, it *is* available
if you have support for Asian Fonts, which you would have to install.

The Help file says:

The feature or some of the options described in this Help topic are only
available if support for Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese,
or Korean is enabled through Microsoft Office Language Settings.

Select the placeholder containing the text you want to change. On the
Formatting toolbar, click Change Text Direction.

Note The conversion to vertical text applies to all of the text within the
selected placeholder. For example, if the placeholder you want to change
contains both English and East Asian text, the text direction for all the
text within the placeholder changes to vertical.

You might also look at using "Word Art" if you are using a pre-2007 version
of PowerPoint.
