typing jumps to curser location

Hi all

I am sure I am being completely stupid and missing something basic, but I am
having frustrating problems with my XP system. Whenever I type anything, on
any application such as word or in emails, I start tio type then the letters
automatically jump to wherever the curser is on the the document, ususally
about two sentenmces behind and starts to write there.

If the curser is left lingering over a button for too long, it also
depresses that,

please advise how I can turn off this feature, I cannot seem to find out how
to do this

Mouse control panel
 
I have looked in the mouse contrl panel before posting, just need a clue as
to what I am looking for there

Look for a check box that says snap to and uncheck it.
