Typing is slow in Internet Explorer

When I open Internet Explorer, or open a new page, say
Google as an example, it can take 10-15 seconds before
what I type shows on the screen. The task manager shows
high CPU usage for explorer.exe during this time. It then
settles down until a new page is opened. I have recently
upgaded to XP Home from ME, and am using a high speed
connection. I have applied all the updates that sound
reasonable, and no other task is hogging the system.

Do you have any suggestions?

I'll probably have some men in blue suits at my door for this one, but I too
had so many problems with IE I started looking for alternatives. This may
not have anything to do with your problem, but I found that since IE is used
by the majority of web users everyone designs their spyware, popups and
exploitations for IE. I now use Firebird almost exclusively. Check it out

This may be due to malware BHOs. First, scan the system for parasites and
remove them. SpyBot S&D searches your harddisk for Spyware and Adware
http://security.kolla.de/

&

Adaware (similar)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
(Remember to perform a Webupdate to have the latest definitions installed)

This will remove malware from the PC.
